NMMC 2025 June General Meeting - Exploring New Mexico’s Special Places

Details

Join us for our June 2025 General Meeting for a brief discussion of the business of the club, opportunities to mingle with other outdoor enthusiasts and NMMC members, and for a special presentation by David Ryan, the coauthor of the most recent edition of 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Albuquerque, who will be speaking about exploring New Mexico’s Special Places.

The talk is based upon his most recent book, Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico and expands upon the themes of exploring and wandering found within the 60 Hikes book to include the entire state. The book, which came out last year, is about places that you can only find in New Mexico and that are compelling enough and important enough to warrant a drive across the country to check out.
For example, of the 26 UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites located in the United States, three of them are in New Mexico – more than any other state. When you add in our state’s amazing landforms, distinct sense of place, archaeological sites, locations of historical and cultural significance, and great weather for year-round outdoor activities you have an amazing place for wandering and exploring.

Wandering in the Clear Light of New Mexico is for those already living in the state, planning to visit the state, and for those who may have forgotten what makes New Mexico so special.

Speaker Information:
David Ryan moved to New Mexico and joined the Mountain Club 26 years ago after hiking the 2180-mile long Appalachian Trail. His time in New Mexico has been spent wandering and exploring every corner of the state. He is also the author of The Gentle Art of Wandering and several other hiking and walking books. His blog and website, www.gentleartofwandering.com, expands upon the themes of wandering and exploring found in his books.
