Cross Country Ski Amabilis Mountain

  • Dec 8, 2012 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Forecast is calling for 2+ feet of snow at Snoqualmie Pass and east of the pass. Currently, there is not enough snow for grooming to begin. It's likely, on Saturday, none of the route will have been groomed. If we find too little snow at Amabilis, we'll head back west and ski Windy Pass which may have more snow at upper elevations.

Route description: starts from Cabin Creek Sno-Park and ascends a logging road with only a few semi-steep sections. Route ends at summit (broad plateau) of Amabilis Mountain.

Route conditions: ungroomed.

Recommended skill-level: advanced-beginner or above. Able to descend moderately steep inclines using snowplow, parallel or telemark turns.

Recommended ski gear: Sturdy waxless touring skis, boots and bindings. Partial metal edges helpful on hard snow/icy sections.

Recommended avalanche safety gear: Not required.

Round-trip distance: 9 miles round-trip.

Elevation gain: 2,200 feet.

Pace: Moderate.

Duration: 3-4 hours.

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous.

Permit: Sno-Park plus groomed sticker.

Drive duration from park-n-ride to trailhead: 80 mins.

Carpooling and fuel reimbursement: Riders please bring cash (10 cents per mile) to compensate your driver.

Seasonal grooming started today at Cabin Creek Sno-Park:

Just enough snow at the trailhead to preclude the need for hiking. None of the route's groomed so we stopped half-way up after 90 minutes of tough trail breaking. Instead of pushing on in 3+ feet of deep snow, we completed two laps in our way laid tracks.

I've been researching options to get people up to Snoqualmie Pass for a cross country ski lesson. If my schedule allows, I hope to have something posted in Dec or Jan.

More than 4 people have signed up so at least one more driver with a Sno-Park permit + Grooming Sticker needs to volunteer to take 2-3 passengers. Permits can be purchased online:

This event is cross-posted on the Cascades XC Ski meetup. Since 8 RSVP spots are open, if more than 4 people RSVP, obviously at least one other Driver (with a Sno-Park grooming sticker) will need to signup.
