18/07/2026: Meet at Heuston Station at 12:30 pm. I am getting the 12:45 pm train to Westport. Alternatively, you can meet me at 4 pm at Westport Station.

At Westport you need to hire a bike.

The route is 44 to 50 km depending on where you stay. Four hours at a moderate pace.

Staying on Achill Island on Saturday night. Accommodation is limited on the island but The Valley House Hostel & Bar still has availability or you could camp.

Declan is organising a hike up Slievemore on Sunday and returning in time for the World Cup final!

So as Patrick says, on Sunday we plan to hike up Slievemore. This is approx 11km with an ascent of just under 700m. The route starts from the beach at Doogort and heads directly up the eastern ridge to the summit, a linear distance of 2km. 700m of ascent in 2km means its a steep gradient of 1 in 3, and over rocky ground so be warned. There are steep cliffs to the seaward side but we'll stay on the safe side of these.
That said, it is magnificent, wild and dramatic with the cliffs and the ocean nearby. The descent is along the western ridge and then back along a track through the deserted village.

On Monday morning I am cycling back to Westport. There is also a public bus service:
Bus Éireann | Route 450 | Dooagh to Louisburgh via Westport
