Sunday Burro Group - Nambe Badlands

PLEASE NOTE 9:00 START TIME.

Sandy has offered to be our Route Guide for this hike :) He prefers an alternate parking area to the one we used to use when Joan led these hikes, but we've gone from this TH with Sandy in the past; everyone should gather at DeVargas at 9:00 & we'll carpool to the TH together. The route will be basically the same one we're familiar with, just accessed from a different start point.

Nambe Badlands is a wide, open landscape, often sunny & usually a bit warmer than here, an area opposite that of a forest hike. With interesting rock formations all around, and vast views of several mountain ranges, it offers what I call a "desolate beauty," quite breathtaking to most of us, dry and barren.

Our route is a little over 5 miles, with many ups & downs, some of them steep, but none lengthy. Elevation gain a bit more than 500 ft.

Drive time is 20-25 minutes each way.

Burro hikes are for experienced hikers, acclimated to altitude here. Newcomers are welcome; prior to your first hike with my Group, please test your fitness by timing yourself hiking up & down Atalaya, which you should be able to do comfortably in 3 hours or less, starting at Wilderness Gate or Staircase, using Steep Route option. Non-aggressive, well mannered dogs are welcome on my hikes.

We meet at the DeVargas Mall parking lot, in the back of the lot (behind stores). Park in a lane near the Bowling Alley, but not right up against the mall wall. We carpool together to all THs. Please offer your driver $4 dollars to cover gas expense for this hike.

We typically leave promptly after gathering together; if you are running even a bit late, please text me & we'll wait for you (not more than 5 minutes though!)

PLEASE be considerate of those on the Waiting List & sign off hike as soon as you know you cannot attend, preferably 24 hours in advance of hike if at all possible. PLEASE DO NOT NO SHOW! Repeated No Shows have consequences.
