As professional mountain guides in Ireland and the UK, we organise days and weekends guided off trails hikes in the island of Ireland.
In addition to this, as course providers for mountaineering Ireland and the UK, we run mountain skills 1 and 2 which is a nationally accredited course. The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to become a competent navigator in the mountains of Ireland and beyond by day, night and bad weather conditions.
Our hikes and courses are not only educative but enjoyable too.
You will learn about the area, the fauna and the historical interests of the area visited.

Mountain Skills (1 and 2) is a nationally accredited course by the Mountain Training Board of Ireland (the new all Ireland mountain body)and is delivered through 2 days tuition in an upland environment. The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to get out hiking; independently, safely, responsibly in the mountains of Ireland, the UK and beyond. To navigate with confidence using a map, a compass and proper equipment in any type of weather condition during day or night time (night time training as being part of MS2).
At the end of this course you will have taken a big step forward in developing your own self-confidence in the Irish mountains and in the UK.
Registration with Mountaineering Ireland is essential in order to take part in this course. There is a fee a € 35 and it covers:
- Access to the full Mountain Skills Scheme (MS1, MS2 and MS Assessment)
- A digital and / or paper Logbook and booklet setting out the scheme and allowing to track your progress- A discounted Mountaineering Ireland membership fee of € 30, if you wish to join at the time of registration. Any explanation and information will be given to you on training day.
Some hiking experience are essential before joining the scheme however, you don’t need to be an expert.
The course runs over 2 days or a full weekend.
Day 1 :Indoor session from 9 – 12 , outdoor session 13 - 17
Day 2 : Indoor session from 10 – 12 outdoor session 13 – 17
The course covers; - Mountain Skills Scheme introduction
- Personal Equipment
- Reading and Understanding Maps
- Features recognition and depiction of relief
- Contour Interpretation
- Scale understanding
- Grid reference and Self Location
- Compass use
- Timing and pacing
- Mountain Environment and the leave no Trace Programme
- Mountain Hazards
- Emergencies
The cost for the 2 days training is €120 (discount available for small groups of 3 plus) which includes: indoor and outdoor tuition, course notes, a logbook, tea or coffee breaks and snacks, 3 route cards for you to practice and a 1 day hiking practice which is part of a weekend in the West of Ireland.
Private and personalised courses for individuals and small groups are also available.
About the course provider.
Emmanuel is a fully qualified Mountain Leader for the island of Ireland and the UK. Emmanuel has been actively hiking from the age of 9, starting in the French Alps where his family is from and over the years, has been hiking in the Alps, (France, Germany, Austria, Italy) in the Pyrenees in Spain, Norway Sweden, the Czech Republic, in Canada and The US. Emmanuel likes to hike by any type of weather conditions and especially at night. However, he doesn’t take any risk and would not hike in stormy conditions as safety comes first. So, hiking is pretty much in his blood.

Wild Camping and a night hike up to Lugnaquilla.
This is a great opportunity to anyone who want to learn how to pitch a tent, how to camp in the wilderness and experience a night hike up to Lugnaquilla.
The weekend is organised but a qualified instructor and course Director of Mountaineering Ireland. During those 2 days, you will gain useful information and skills that will help keep you safe on the hills and mountains during daytime or nighttime.
As part of the 2 days, I’ll talk about the geology of Ireland, the last Ice Ages, the origin of the Irish peat, the first people who transformed the Irish landscape, the flora and fauna.
Our hikes are not only enjoyable but, educative too.
In addition to this you will learn about safe movement skills, basic navigation, basic map reading, equipment and safety considerations which are part of the Mountain Skills Course syllabus.
What do I need for the 2 days.
A 1- or 2-men tents can be provided as well as some cooking stoves however, you will have to carry them. You will need to bring food for the 2 days included snacks (I’ll provide a list of food you can bring)
In addition to a small sleeping back, you will need to wear comfortable clothing like - leggings, tracksuit bottoms, breathable T-Shirt and fleece & an extra warm layer (fleece). Be ready for the rain and pack a rain jacket and rain trousers. A hat and gloves to keep you safe from the wind. Wear good sturdy walking shoes or hillwalking boots with woolly or synthetic socks. Don’t forget to bring first aid kit with plaster and bandages, personal medicine, inhaler, epipen etc.
Maps and compasses can be supplied by the instructor. Have your phone fully charged to.
