Full Moon, Sunrise Mt. Timpanogos Hike

Details

**Please Read the Full Description; There is IMPORTANT information and instructions below that are necessary to your ability to get to and park at the trailhead for this event**

General Description:
This summer, we are lucky enough to have a full moon coinciding with a weekend. To take advantage of this, we will do a Full Moon, Sunrise hike of Mt. Timpanogos. We will plan to arrive at the trailhead at midnight on Saturday morning and depart around 12:30 a.m. This will give us 5.5 hours to reach the summit (plenty of time but an early enough departure to get ahead of the sea of hikers and headlamps departing between 1 and 2 a.m.). We'll enjoy first light and sunrise between 6:00 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., before turning back down and returning to the car.

Trail Option and Parking Information
We are aiming to do this via the Timpooneke Trail, which is 14.2 miles with about 4500 ft of elevation gain.

This, however, requires us to get parking permits. The permits go on sale 30 days ahead of time at 8:00 a.m. MT. The permits will cost a total of $12 each. Every participant should attempt to secure a permit. If you are unsuccessful in doing so, we will attempt to put together some carpools. If too many of us strike out on getting parking permits, we will look at drop off options or switch to the Aspen Grove route, which is 13.9 miles with 4900 feet of elevation gain.
While the path up to Mt. Timpanogos is generally tame by peak standards, both routes include a class 2 scramble from the saddle to the summit with some areas with commitment challenges and some ledged areas/steep drop offs of trail.

Weather:
Although this event is happening in the middle of summer, the saddle and summit of Mt. Timpanogos can be very windy and cold. Last time I did this the air temperature at the saddle around 4:00 a.m. was a tick above freezing and there were sustained winds in excess of 20 mph. Accordingly, it is advisable to bring some very warm clothing and possibly an emergency blanket, especially if we arrive at the saddle early and have an hour to wait before summitting.

Attendee Limit:
Because this hike is in a wilderness area, there is an attendee cap of 15 people for this event. If the event fills, we may get a second organizer to take a second group, possibly on the same trial possibly on the Aspen Grove route.

Cancellation Fee:
Because this event has an attendee cap and because each participant needs to attempt to secure a parking permit, this event does have a cancelation deadline of July 4, 2025, so that those on the waitlist have the opportunity to commit before the parking permits become available. A $25 cancellation fee will apply to anyone who cancels after July 4, 2025, and that fee must be paid by cash or check no later than September 8, 2025, to remain in the group.
