About us
For anyone who wants to practice their outdoor photography skills (landscape, urban, wildlife, macro, etc) and get a little walking workout in at the same time. I do this (almost) every weekend so I'm out and about anyway -- I might as well do it with company! Sometimes it's more walking and sometimes it's more shooting. But almost always a mix of both.
For now, events take place in Richmond and surrounding counties but eventually we’ll go further afield. If you want to organize a hike or two let me know and we can talk about making you a co-organizer.
I have a lot of photography skills and knowledge, acquired from both school and practice, and I'm happy to share my experiences, but I am always learning. This is a community of "peer learning" and I'm just the facilitator. So come join us!
No photography skills required! A camera is helpful but a phone works as well, as long as you have the passion and interest.
Please note:

Indoor Photo Walk: Architecture & Art at ICA VCU (Beat the Heat!)
Institute for Contemporary Art, 601 W. Broad Street, Richmond, VA, USJust like our indoor photo walk at the VMFA last summer, it’s simply too hot to hike outside right now! Let's beat the mid-summer heat and take our lenses indoors to explore the striking architecture and cutting-edge contemporary installations at the ICA VCU.
Designed by legendary architect Steven Holl, the building itself is a masterpiece of shifting light, fluid spacing, and sharp geometric forms. Whether you’re a seasoned architectural photographer or just love finding unique angles, this space offers an incredible canvas.
Photography Inspiration & Ideas:
- Bold Geometry: Capture the dramatic, shifting shapes of the exterior zinc and glass panels, or the sweeping, stark curves of the main central staircase inside.
- Light & Translucency: Look for how the satin-finish translucent glass walls diffuse the morning sunlight, casting soft, gorgeous ambient light across the concrete floors.
- Abstract & Minimalist: Use the vast white walls, high ceilings, and intersecting architectural lines to compose clean, high-contrast minimalist frames.
- The Human Element: Use the scale of the contemporary art installations as backdrops to capture candid frames of visitors engaging with the artwork.
How We'll Roll: To keep things relaxed, natural, and respectful of the gallery environment, this will be a completely self-paced walk. We won't be moving as a single massive crowd; instead, feel free to dive deep on your own or wander around in casual pairs and threesomes.
Important Gear Reminders:
- No flash allowed inside the galleries. Make sure to bring a fast prime lens (like a 35mm or 50mm with a wide aperture of f/1.4, f/1.8, or f/2) to handle the indoor lighting smoothly.
- No tripods or monopods are permitted in the building, so plan to shoot entirely handheld.
Lunch Afterwards: Once you've wrapped up your frames, let's meet up around 11:45 AM at the Abby Moore Cafe located right inside the building. It’s a perfect spot to cool down, grab a bite to eat, and share what we captured.
