Deep thinkers hike

Discussion topic: What does it mean to feel seen in conversations?
There's a name for steering conversations back to ourselves when someone is sharing something about themselves. Sociologist Charles Derber calls this 'Conversational Narcissism'. It's subtle, usually unconscious, and often comes from either a desire to connect, or control (i'm certainly guilty of this). But, it leaves others feeling unseen... further disconnecting us.
For this hike, I'd like for us to restore the lost art of listening. We'll discuss why our brains are wired to redirect attention to ourselves, and how to build conversations with real depth... the kind where both people feel seen, met, and heard.
- What's the difference between listening to understand... vs listening to speak our turn?
- What do you learn about yourself from someone you struggle to listen to?
