Wachau Hike: Apricot Blossoms, Mammoth Trees & Göttweig Abbey
Details
Hi everyone,
On Saturday, April 4, 2026, I’m planning a beautiful spring hike in the UNESCO-Region Wachau from Paudorf to the Mammoth trees (Sequoia trees, Redwood trees) and (hopefully) blooming apricot tree gardens near Angern to our final destination to Göttweig abbey (Stift Göttweig) in Furth bei Göttweig.
This hike is all about walking, wide views, and enjoying the landscape together with plenty of time for conversation, short breaks, and simply being outdoors.
Highlights
🌄Wide Wachau views combined with peaceful vineyard and apricot garden scenery
🏰Historic landmark Stift Göttweig/Göttweig Abbey
🌸Late March to mid-April is peak season for the famous Wachau Marillenblüte (apricot blossoms). With a bit of luck, we’ll walk right through blooming apricot trees — one of the most beautiful sights of spring in Austria
Meeting Point & Travel
📍 Meeting point: Westbahnhof station at 07:45 a.m., near the ticket machines on the upper floor close to the train platforms.
Please buy your ticket individuallly before boarding the train. The best ticket choice for this trip by train is the VOR Freizeitticket.
We will take the 08:18 train to St. Pölten and change there to a local train. Expected arrival time in Paudorf is 09:28
Trains back from Furth bei Göttweig run every hour
Hike Details

More information on the trail:
We will more or less combine these two trails:

End of Hike & Optional Visit
I plan to end the hike at Göttweig Abbey, where we can optionally visit the museum.
At the end of the hike, everyone can decide individually whether to stay with the group or travel back to Vienna independently.
The restaurant at Göttweig Abbey may be open depending on our arrival time and seat availability.
Göttweig Abbey is a 900-year-old Benedictine monastery overlooking the Danube. The museum features baroque highlights such as frescoes by Paul Troger and historic imperial rooms, and offers insight into monastic life and Austrian history.
- Museum entry: €14 per person
- Free with: NÖ Card

What to Expect
We’ll walk together at a relaxed, social pace, staying as a group throughout the day.
This is not a race or performance hike — the focus is on shared experience, conversation, and enjoying the landscape at an unhurried rhythm.
We’ll take regular short breaks whenever useful.
🥪 We don’t plan to stop at huts or restaurants during the hike, so please bring your own snacks and drinks (at least 1.5 liters of water).
🌧️ Weather can be changeable, so basic rain protection is recommended.
🥾 Please wear sturdy hiking shoes. Some sections may be muddy, depending on the weather.
Please note that there are no public toilets on the trail itself, only at the Abbey.

Ticket information
The best ticket choice for this trip by train is likely to be the VOR Freizeitticket.
It costs €19.90 for the day in Lower Austria and covers ÖBB regional trains (trains operated by the Wachaubahn, displayed as WHB in the train schedules, are not included) and local buses in Lower Austria.

And if this sounds complicated: it isn’t. As long as you arrive at the meeting point on time, I’ll help coordinate everything there so we can start the hike relaxed.
