From Castle Ruins to Roman City: Hainburg → Carnuntum

Join me for this beautiful hike through layers of European history on Saturday 26th September 2026.
As we walk, history unfolds naturally along the trail.

What we'll disocver
✔ Atmospheric medieval walls, gates, and Hainburg castle in Hainburg an der Donau
✔ Traces of everyday life in ancient times, from Celtic earthworks to Roman routes and settlements
✔ At the end of the hike, we plan to visit the Roman City of Carnuntum (optional). Entrance fee: €15 per person
You have the option to skip this and return directly to Vienna from Casrnuntum, trains run every hour.

Meeting Point& Travel
We will meet at Wien Hauptbahnhof at 08:00 a.m., near the ticket machines in the main hall.
The REX7 leaves from Wien-Meidling at 08:23.
Please buy your individual ticket before boarding the train. If you don't have a Vorteilscard, the VOR Freizeitticket might be a good option for you.

Hike Details
Route: Hainburg & Hainburg Castle → Petronell → Carnuntum

• Distance: approx. 15 km
• Elevation gain: approx. 300 m
• Walking time: approx. 4 hours (pure walking time)
• Difficulty: Easy technically, but requires basic fitness

Please be aware that this hike will be mostly flat and we'll walk a lot on asphalt/concrete paths.

What to Expect
We’ll walk together at a relaxed, social pace, staying as a group throughout the day.
This is not a race or performance hike — the focus is on shared experience, conversation, and enjoying the landscape at an unhurried rhythm.
We’ll take regular short breaks whenever useful.

What to Bring
Please bring:

• Your own snacks
• At least 2.5 liters of water
• Basic rain protection, as weather can be changeable
• Suitable shoes

Some sections may be muddy, depending on the weather.
Toilets: Please note that there are no public toilets on the trail itself. Toilets are available only at the beginning and the end.
