Grab your hiking shoes, water bottle, and finest beaver-related jokes—we’re heading to Canoe Creek State Park near Altoona to explore the Canoe Lake and Beaver Pond Trail Loop!
This moderately challenging loop covers approximately 5.2 miles with 439 feet of elevation gain. The route begins with a steep climb—because apparently the trail wants to test our commitment immediately—but it becomes gentler as we continue around the lake. Along the way, we’ll enjoy peaceful forest scenery, beautiful lake views, Beaver Pond, Canoe Creek Dam, and the historic Blair Limestone Company kilns.

We’ll hike through forests, travel around Canoe Lake, visit Beaver Pond, and explore some fascinating historic ruins. Wildlife sightings are possible, although the beavers have not officially confirmed their attendance.
The trail can become muddy after rain, so wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots that you do not mind introducing to Pennsylvania soil. Recent hikers have also mentioned occasional bugs and muddy sections.

Bring plenty of water, a snack, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, insect repellent, and a positive attitude. Trekking poles may also be helpful for the opening climb and any slippery areas.
