Waiheke Island Trip
Details
Let's mark the end of year with this fabulous trip to Waiheke Island!
Waiheke Island is famous for its award-winning vineyards, making it known as "New Zealand's Island of Wine". It is also renowned for its beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, and vibrant arts scene. Other attractions include olive groves, outdoor activities, and a thriving food scene...
Plan is to meet at 8.45 AM at Auckland downtown terminal to catch the Fullers ferry to Waiheke Island. Ferry depart at 9 AM and cost $62 return ticket for an Adult.
When we arrive to Mataia Ferry, we will walk a section of Te Ara Hura route (walking track), this is a coastal, cliff top walk which offers magnificent views... We will walk to Cable bay, then Owhanake Bay, Korora Road. We will also walk a separate track ( a section of Island bay track to the viewpoint and back).
We will reach Oneroa Bay and have a lunch stop, 30 min on the beach. Possibly a quick swim? , only if you are keen, no pressure :)
After exploring Oneroa bay and Little Oneroa bay, we will make our way back to the Ferry terminal by taking Moa Avenue, The Esplanade, follow Te Aratura walkway, then Nick Johnstone Drive,30 min back on the trail and we reach the Matiatia Ferry terminal.
Plan is to catch the 5 PM Ferry back. The ferry trip takes approx 40 min. And we arrive back to Auckland Ferry terminal for a Gelato ice cream :) before heading off home.
Summary:
- Time to complete: Up to 6 hrs give or take 30 min and that includes stops and breaks.
- Difficulty: 3 out of 5. This is not a challenging, difficult hike however a good level of fitness is required and willingness to walk at a moderate pace with the rest of the group.
- Distance: Between 15 and 18 km depending if we do an optional track to the view point.
- Terrain: Mixed: sandy beaches, hiking trails, gravel roads, and a couple of streets.
What to bring:
Plenty of water ( I suggest min 2 Lt) as it will be hot and we will be walking on exposed sections a lot of the time.., snacks, lunch, sun hat, sun block, comfortable clothes and shoes to wear. First aid items.
Please bring $5 donation to contribute to the running costs of this meet up.
This is a great trip and I highly recommend it. The focus will be to have a relaxing, memorable day with your fellow hikers :)
See you on Sunday,
Kristina.
