Hello everyone,

On Saturday, we are going to do this amazing loop in Coromandel forest park, near Thames township.

This loop is special is its incredible variety, packing a wild backcountry adventure, spectacular panoramic views, and rich gold-mining heritage into a single day hike accessible straight from the Thames township. As you climb, you transition seamlessly from peaceful, lush native fern valleys into a moody sub-tropical cloud forest, passing mysterious old mining shafts hidden in the bush that transport you back to the Coromandel's 19th-century gold rush era. Reaching the high ridge rewards you with the breathtaking, vibrant orange-red lichens of the Red Rocks viewpoint, offering sweeping, dramatic vistas across the vast Kauaeranga Valley all the way to Table Mountain.

Plan for the day: We will meet at the start of the track, at the end of Karaka road at 9.15am, to do introductions and briefing. We will then start our walk promptly at 9.30 am.
Karaka track: Can be a bit muddy, sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
We will hike the karaka track until we hit the junction, then we will take the Waiotahi track, return.

Summary of this hike:
Distance: 15-16 km
Elevation: 650-865 m
Terrain: Proper tramping tracks in backcountry forest, some streams and a bit of mud.
Time: Up to 6 hrs to complete, including stops.
Difficulty: Intermediate, grade 3.

Note, the 2 tracks do not join together and we will need to walk on the road for 30 min to get back to our cars.

We should finish between 4 to 4.30 PM. We will not rush, and we will hike at a medium pace and make stops when we need to. If you are a beginner and do not feel confident just yet, this might not be the right hike for you. This hike is suitable for intermediate hikers who are confident in such environment and confident hiking through mud, crossing streams and keeping up with the rest of the group at a medium pace.

What to bring: Hiking boots, hiking gear and clothes, 2 Lt of water, lunch and snacks. First aid items.

$5 for this group contribution.

If you require a ride, I suggest $25 to give to your driver. This must be paid in advance before the start of the hike.
