What we’re about
For anyone who wants to practice their outdoor photography skills (landscape, urban, wildlife, macro, etc) and get a little walking workout in at the same time. I do this (almost) every weekend so I'm out and about anyway -- I might as well do it with company! Sometimes it's more walking and sometimes it's more shooting. But almost always a mix of both.
For now, events take place in Richmond and surrounding counties but eventually we’ll go further afield. If you want to organize a hike or two let me know and we can talk about making you a co-organizer.
I have a lot of photography skills and knowledge, acquired from both school and practice, and I'm happy to share my experiences, but I am always learning. This is a community of "peer learning" and I'm just the facilitator. So come join us!
No photography skills required! A camera is helpful but a phone works as well, as long as you have the passion and interest.

See all- Macro Photography at Larus Park || 2 Miles Flat/ShadeLewis G. Larus Park, Richmond, VA
The forest should be coming alive at this point. Green shoots, young ferns, and if we're lucky we'll see Jack in the Pulpits plus lots of fungi. We can create some dreamy fantasy worlds using macro techniques.
Here's a great, short video from a photographer I follow who takes wonderful forest macro shots and explains how he takes them, including when he makes mistakes. I recommend viewing the video before the shoot on Sunday if you can.
Description from AllTrails.com:
*"Experience this 2.2-mile loop trail near Richmond, Virginia. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 50 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, running, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.Larus Park is 106 acres of wooded solitude bounded by Huguenot Road, Chippenham Parkway and Stony Point Fashion Park. There’s a network of singletrack trails in Larus park. A biker or runner could probably get in 3-4 miles here, but would have to backtrack in places to see all the trail. The park is an urban explorer’s dream, there are many social trails off the main paths that are not marked and closely border private property. Please stay on the main marked trails."
Well-behaved dogs welcome.
