Due to the road conditions and possibility of more winter weather, I will not be able to lead this event on Saturday 1/31/26.

But that doesn't mean you can't go! I've left the event on and if you want to go, reach out to others who RSVP'd.

Join us at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to do some indoor photography. The VMFA is an amazing resource in downtown Richmond that is free to the public (and heated) with plenty to photograph. There is incredible natural lighting due to large windows in the main hall. The architecture offers lines, curves, stairs, and textures to play with. The artwork and exhibits offer glimpses of culture, history, and color.

What to bring:

  • DSLR and Mirrorless: There is no flash photography, so a fast lens and a short focal length will be best.
  • Smartphones: Phone ;-)

What not to bring:

  • Tripods are not allowed
  • Flash photography is not allowed

Rules:
• We need to break up into small groups of 2-3 photographers
• We cannot use flash, tripods, or selfie sticks
• We must not disturb or interrupt other guests
• We can photograph the artwork, architecture, and any other objects or structures
• We cannot photograph other visitors (intentionally) and no group shots/selfies

Schedule:

  • 10:00 - meet in the front lobby just inside the main entrance
  • 10:10 - divide up into small groups and roam the free area, looking at art and taking photos
  • 11:30 - reconvene in the lobby
  • Optional: Join your photographer friends at the Best Café (in the museum) for coffee and food

Other available opportunities you might want to partake in:

  1. The museum offers free highlights tours on weekends at 11AM and 2PM in the Cochrane Atrium. Photography is allowed on the tours.
  2. Several exhibits are available for a fee (or for members). Review exhibits here.
  3. If the weather is good, there are good photo ops of sculptures in the sculpture garden and the other architecture and artifacts on the grounds
