Laurel Hill East Cemetery, St James The Less & Wannamaker Bell Tower

Laurel Hill East Cemetery is the most historic and scenic cemetery in Philadelphia. Scores of the most famous people in Philadelphia, even the world, are buried here including General George Meade of Civil War fame, who not only lived in Philadelphia, but was a member of the Fairmount Park Commission. Of more recent fame is Harry Kalas, the voice of the Phillies, whose gravesite uniquely displays a large microphone and several blue baseball park seats. Besides historical, Laurel Hill East (there is a newer Laurel HIll West Cemetery too) is situated on a high ridge above the Schuylkill with the most beautiful views that can be found along the banks.

After exploring the cemetery we'll head over to St James the Less Church and School which is a real anachronism. Built around 1848 the church was designed after a 1000 year old church in England. You would never expect to find an incredible treasure like this in the neighborhood. I only stumbled upon it on one of my weird explorations. On the grounds is a bell tower that entombs the remains of the famous Wanamaker family of Philadelphia. (John Wanamaker department stores). The medieval tower shows no name. The bells toll every 15 minutes. Only a colossal effort by a few individuals have kept the school, church, and grounds from development.
