Philadelphia Architectural Style Hike 2 of 6: Italianate Buildings
Details
2.5-3.5 hours; 3-4 miles; brisk pace between stops; best examples of Italianate architecture in Philadelphia's Spring Garden neighborhood; possibility of late lunch afterward if there's interest.
Have you ever noticed how many buildings in Philadelphia feature beautiful arches and look almost like an Italian villa? These buildings are in the Italianate style and were built between about 1840 and 1885. Graceful Italianate rowhomes and mansions with tall, elegant windows and simple cornices beautify the city's streets in every direction from City Hall.
After we gather, we'll head up to Spring Garden Street, which features over a dozen of the loveliest Italianate houses in the city. Then we'll take a hop over to Green Street and Broad Street and finally back toward Logan Square to check out mansions in the Italianate style that are truly stunning.
If you haven't been on previous architecture style hikes with us, I guarantee you'll see Philadelphia from a new perspective. For those who have joined previous hikes, this hike features ALL NEW buildings that we haven't visited previously. Everyone is welcome!
As always, we will move quickly between buildings, but we'll also stop for enough time at each one to enjoy and discuss the wonderful craftsmanship. No knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
