Philadelphia Architecture Hike 2 of 12: Best of Greek Revival and Neoclassical
Details
3-4 hours, 6-7 miles, brisk pace between stops, best examples of Greek Revival and Neoclassical architecture in Philadelphia, late lunch afterward if there's interest.
According to a TikTok (so an authoritative source), men think about Ancient Rome several times a day. Judging from our architecture, in Philadelphia we're more obsessed with Ancient Greece. Buildings that look like Greek temples are so popular here that they have two styles named for them. Greek Revival architecture was prominent in Philadelphia from about 1820 to 1860, and later on Neoclassical architecture blossomed from about 1890 to 1950. Neoclassical buildings were designed to harken back to both Ancient Greece and the Greek Revival style, with its positive association with the early years of the American republic. We will check out wonderful examples of both styles.
First up, it's a little-known fact that Rocky ran up the Art Museum steps because he wanted to get a better look at one of the world's greatest Neoclassical buildings. We'll climb up there too (raised fists optional). Then it's back down the Ben Franklin Parkway to Center City for more Neoclassical masterpieces, including one of Philadelphia's true cathedrals. Afterward we'll check out several beautiful Greek Revival buildings in Society Hill, including one with a lantern tower that's a copy of a 2,500-year-old monument in Athens. We'll also visit the elegant First Bank of the United States. (Bonus points if you can tell the group what kind of columns are on the bank's portico.)
We will move quickly between locations, while stopping for enough time to enjoy and discuss each one. As always, no knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
