2.5-3 hours, 3-4 miles, brisk pace between stops, best examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Philadelphia, lunch afterward if there's interest.

You don't have to fly to Europe to see incredible cathedrals in the Gothic style. We have several in Philadelphia . . . although ours are about 500 years younger! Gothic Revival architecture thrived in Philadelphia between about 1830 and 1870, and it continued to be a key design element in many church and college campus buildings through the end of the 19th century. On this hike we will visit about a dozen of these buildings, and by the end you'll agree that we CAN still build them like we used to!

Our first stop will be the astounding Church of the New Jerusalem, which is now part of the Philadelphia College of Physicians complex. Then we'll stop by other stunning churches in Center City . . . and even a couple of private homes in the Gothic style. Finally we'll pause at an apartment building that gets my vote for the most beautiful example of Gothic Revival in the entire city.

We will move quickly between locations, while stopping for enough time to enjoy and discuss each one. As always, no knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
