Architectural Gems of Philadelphia Neighborhoods: Spring Garden
Details
3-3.5 hours, 4-5 miles, brisk pace between stops, best buildings in Philadelphia's Spring Garden neighborhood, lunch afterward if there's interest.
We are returning to our hikes to check out the most impressive architectural gems in a series of Philadelphia neighborhoods. For this one we will hike through the Spring Garden neighborhood, which features dozens of opulent mansions and elegant townhouses built in the late 1800s. If you haven't visited this area, and in particular the section of Green Street west of Broad, you'll be surprised by the exquisite craftsmanship of these buildings. Among the highlights will be a (former) clothing factory with candy-cane arches, an over-the-top mansion built for a single family that now has room for over a dozen apartments, and my pick for the best Art Deco building in Philadelphia (which we don't normally visit on these hikes, as it's off the beaten path).
As always, no knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
