Architectural Gems of Philadelphia Neighborhoods: Society Hill
Details
2.5-3 hours, 2-3 miles, brisk pace between stops, best buildings in Philadelphia's Society Hill neighborhood, lunch afterward if there's interest.
We are continuing our hikes to check out the most impressive architectural gems in a series of Philadelphia neighborhoods. For this one we will hike through Society Hill, but we'll do it "Hiking Around Philly" style, which means we'll check out cool buildings beyond the Colonial-era stalwarts on the standard tourist walking tour of the neighborhood. Among the highlights will be a building with a full-scale model of an ancient Greek monument at the top, a beautiful synagogue which is the oldest one in Philadelphia still in continuous use, and an impressive stone church featuring four different historical plaques and funky dragon gargoyles staring down from the tower.
As always, no knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
