Philadelphia Architecture Hike 6 of 13: Best of Second Empire Style
Details
2-3 hours, 2-3 miles, brisk pace between stops, best examples of Second Empire architecture in Philadelphia, lunch afterward if there's interest.
Philadelphia is sometimes affectionately called the “Paris of America,” and on this hike we’ll see buildings crowned with dramatic mansard roofs, elaborate dormers, and enough ornament to make a French emperor feel right at home! These buildings are in the Second Empire architectural style, which was imported from France and became popular in Philadelphia during the decades after the Civil War.
We’ll start by checking out the wonderfully ornate Victory Building, then head to City Hall . . . Philadelphia’s ultimate Second Empire showstopper, packed with towers, sculpture, and unbelievable stonework. From there we’ll work our way around Rittenhouse Square to admire a series of beautiful private homes built for some of the city’s wealthiest families. Their steep roofs, richly carved details, and grand facades bring a little bit of imperial Paris to the streets of Philadelphia!
We will move quickly between locations, while stopping for enough time to enjoy and discuss each one. As always, no knowledge of architecture is needed . . . just an interest in seeing beautiful places and a willingness to stay with the group.
