This hike will explore the western part of Moreau Lake State Park from the Lake Bonita parking area. We will go on the new West Ridge Trail, across the Palmerton Ridge, then work our way by Lake Ann and eventually back to the Lake Bonita area. It will cover 8.5 miles and stop at 4 of the Hudson River overlooks on the West Ridge Trail including one with a great overlook of Spier Falls Dam. We’ll have lunch at on of these overlooks.
We will start at the Lake Bonita trailhead off of Wilton Mountain Road Parking area of Moreau Lake State Park. As mentioned, it’s about 8.5 miles. So, this is not for beginners or slow-paced hikers. Please note the rating for this hike.
The Lake Bonita area added 730 acres to Moreau Lake SP about 5 years ago. Lake Bonita is home to sensitive vegetation that exists in acid environments on floating mats of vegetation (bog islands). This lake is vastly different from highly used recreational Moreau Lake on the eastern side of the Park. To keep Lake Bonita pristine, state officials have decided to prohibit any type of boating, including canoes and kayaks, on Lake Bonita. You might see some Pitcher plants poking out as we go around the lake.
Directions:
We will meet at the trailhead, please be at the Wilton Mountain Road parking area at 9:00 am.
