Description: Bommer and Red Tail Ridge trails are nice big, wide, well-groomed dirt maintenance roads. Rattlesnake Ridge is a narrow single-track trail, with minimal ups and downs. Along with cooling ocean breezes, on a clear day there are nice views of the ocean, and the other ridges and canyons along the way. This is an out and back hike.
Sometimes we may see some wildlife: quail, hawks, roadrunners, bunny wabbits, and if we are very lucky, maybe a snake or a tarantula.
Parking: There is plenty of on-street parking all along Ridge Park Road and East Coastal Peak Road. GPS Address: 20403 E Coastal Peak, Newport Coast, CA 92657.
Route: From the rest room meeting point, we can access the Pacific Ridge trail directly across the street, heading to the left, to Bommer Ridge trail. When we get to Red Tail Ridge we turn right, where we enter Crystal Cove State Park. When we get to the fork, we keep left and take Rattlesnake trail, staying on top of the ridge. Then return the way we came. See Photos for more details.
What to bring: Water, maybe a snack or lunch, sunglasses, sturdy hiking shoes, maybe hiking poles if you have them, a hat or umbrella, a happy attitude and a big smile!
