http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/7/1/a/event_111338682.jpegDESCRIPTION: Dawn mine was actively mined for gold up to the early fifties, and has approximately 12,000 feet of tunneling. In addition, we will go to the Mt Lowe Trail Camp where picnic tables and outhouses are available. The hike also offers panoramic views of the LA basin, and was the site of a train for tourists built around 1909, overlooking the LA basin. Coming down from the Mt Lowe Trail Camp we will take a one mile long side trail going down about 700 feet to the Dawn Mine. There we can explore the mine (bring flashlight), or just kick back next to the stream before we come up the trail again.

This is a 12 mile hike with approximately 3000 feet elevation gain. It is rated Intermediate PLUS, and definitely not for beginners. The trail is relatively well groomed with very few rocks to negotiate. If it is a cool and sunny day, plan on little shade. This hike is on, even if it rains, because of the trail options. Also plan on 6 hours between the start of the hike and getting back to the trail head. No dogs please.

DIRECTIONS: There is limited parking at the trail head, and traffic may be slow, so carpooling is a must. We will meet at the Orange Park and Ride on 2555 Tustin Ave near Lincoln Ave at 7:00 AM to load up the cars with the hikers. Directions to the trailhead: Take the 57 North to the 210. Go West for about 18 miles to Lake Ave exit. Go right for about 3.6 miles to Loma Alta Drive. Turn left and go 1.1 miles to Chaney Trail. Turn right (stay left at a Y) and go about 1 mile to trail head. An adventure pass is required.

NECESSITIES: Adequate water (2 to 3 liters), water/snack/lunch, hat, sunscreen, layered clothing to adjust to climate change, flashlight for the mine exploration, gas money. Optional: Trekking Poles, camera, binoculars.
