This is a workshop for newbie Dungeon Masters (people having DMed 3 campaigns or less) to help aspiring DMs get the confidence and feedback they need to start their own tables. Every week we play a one shot (the DM can chose part of a module or homebrew they would like to workshop) for about an hour, featuring a different person playing as the DM every week.
It's meant to be a kind of lightning round for newbies to get a feel for DM mechanics (managing all the NPCs, keeping track of everyone's damage and AC, executive decisions, gauging player's interest and pacing, etc.) while getting constructive feedback from other very nice and compassionate DMs. It's really fun to see different play styles and incredibly useful for sharing what's in our DM toolboxes. Even if you're not the DM of the week, it's great opportunity to try different classes to get an idea of thier mechanics and develop more characters to be recycled in future campaigns. It's also a way for us to get an extra mini D&D fix into the week, which is always a good thing!
Please note that this is not a free meeting and it has a sliding fee depending on your role of the week:
DM of the week pays $10 through paypal (money goes to cover subscription fees to meetup and zoom, which all attendees benefit from)
PC DMs pay in the form of kind and useful feedback.
This fee system makes it fair since you don't have to pay every week while waiting to be the presiding DM. In this way the meeting is cheaper for everyone and I don't have to have multiple awkward conversations about payment every week.
Games will be in an online format, simultaneously on zoom and Roll20. For simplicity I will be hosting the zoom calls, but we will be logging into other people's roll20 games (since they will likely need their DM materials like maps, NPC icons, music tracks, etc.) Details for coordinating on roll20 will be discussed at the beginning of the zoom call. Please have a one shot for five level 3 characters that can be kept to an hour (usually one or two fight scenes are plenty) in case you are the DM of the week and also have a level 3 character ready to play in case you are not. In the event nobody has a one shot prepared the meeting is canceled, so for realzies, please have something prepared when you show up.
If you plan to come, please RSVP or the event will be canceled two days before if there are no sign ups.
There is no attendee limit, simply a first come, first served basis until we reach critical mass. RSVPing on the event page does not guarantee you a spot if someone else shows up before you. What does guarantee you getting into the meeting is being one of the first five or six people to attend the zoom meeting. If enough people show up, I will be happy to start another table an hour later to manage the overflow for those who arrived too late to get a spot for the 7pm meeting.
