About us

Friends of the Hillside is a community group dedicated to restoring and caring for the Hillside Natural Area in El Cerrito—a hidden biodiversity hotspot of coastal grassland and oak woodland.

We host regular, hands-on volunteer work parties where people of all ages help remove invasive plants, support native species, and reduce wildfire risk. No experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to connect with the land.

Beyond restoration, we offer guided walks, plant identification sessions, and seasonal events that turn the landscape into a living classroom. It’s a place to learn, contribute, and be part of a growing community working toward a healthier, more resilient ecosystem—one step at a time.

What to expect:

  • Flexible participation—join when you can
  • Family-friendly environment
  • Learn to identify native and invasive plants
  • Contribute to meaningful local impact

Whether you’re looking to get your hands dirty, learn about California’s native plants, or meet like-minded people, Friends of the Hillside welcomes you.
