Afternoon on Horicon Marsh (boat tour of the marsh and “cathedral” exploration)
Details
BOAT TICKETS ARE $14, and may be purchased on site.
The afternoon will begin with a guided boat tour of Horicon Marsh from 1-2 pm. Long considered one of the seven natural wonders of Wisconsin, it is a “wetland of international importance” and critical sanctuary for hundreds of species of migratory birds that spans over 33,000 acres. Natural history here dates back to the ice age, human history here is thousands of years old, and conservation efforts came early (the 1920s)
When this finishes we will drive up to Lomira to visit St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church for some self-guided exploration of the church and adjacent cemetery. Colloquially known as “the cathedral on the marsh,” it is one of the most ornate rural churches in Wisconsin, and contains transept windows that are some of the biggest I have ever seen outside of Milwaukee.
For those who wish to have drinks or an early dinner, I will soon post separately a sign up for dinner in Fond du Lac around 3:45 PM. I am leaning towards 11:11 Burgers and Beignets, which I have read has some of the best burgers in South Central, Wisconsin.
