Guided tour of St Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral

Details

I know it’s a little early to be posting a July event, but Peg (one of our esteemed members) helped me secure a real gem here, visiting a place I tried and failed to bring this group a couple times many years ago. This is as high on my Cathedral bucket list as any church in the state. Unfortunately Milwaukee’s Serbian restaurants don’t open until evening, but i will likely list a separate signup for a different kind of restaurant for lunch as we get nearer to the date.

“St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral was designed [in 1956] in the Serbo-Byzantine style. The interior of the cathedral is covered almost entirely with wall mosaics that cost more than US$3 million, and 35 years to complete. The mosaics were designed by Italian artist Sirio Tonelli, and depict a number of important Orthodox Christian figures in the Byzantine iconographic style. The mosaics have been described as, "some of the most extensive and elaborate church mosaics in the United States." by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.”
