Stories of Women’s Resilience, Hope, and Resistance

Three acclaimed authors will discuss their books:

• Meagan Church. The Last Carolina Girl (2023). Set in 1935 North Carolina, is the story of an orphan girl, caught in the state’s eugenics/forced-sterilization machinery, the Eugenics Board of North Carolina, a department of the state government of North Carolina.
• Donna Everhart, Women of a Promiscuous Nature (2026). Set in 1940s North Carolina, is the story of women accused of “promiscuity” who are imprisoned and subjected to involuntary medical treatment at the State Industrial Farm Colony for Women, tied to the broader “American Plan” to regulate women’s sexuality.
• Vanessa Miller, The American Queen (2024), is based on real events between 1865 and 1889, and follows a Black woman as she and her companions make their way from enslavement in Mississippi to freedom in the foothills of North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina where they build a kingdom.
