Chipping Norton: Revolution in the Cotswolds!
Details
Come and explore the enchanting market town of Chipping Norton (affectionately known as Chippy).
Learn how this historic town first evolved.
Discover the intriguing history of the High Street with its Town Hall, its shops and its pubs.
Experience the iconic almshouses and the tiny but dynamic theatre.
Absorb the beauty of the local parish church of St Mary the Virgin, a Cotswolds Wool Church with breathtaking architecture and some fascinating tombs to investigate. At the Church we will uncover the story of Henry Joyce, Vicar of the St Mary’s in 1549 who led a popular uprising from this very spot. “Chippy” has been quite a revolutionary town!
We will view the impressive Bliss Mill (pictured) and hear the riveting story of the strike of 1913-14. (Forget Arthur Scargill - those of you who are old enough to remember him! Chipping Norton had activists of its own! )
In addition we will unearth the tales of the surrounding countryside, including the story of the ancient Rollright Stones and the old railway line. We will enjoy the stories of famous locals such as Rev Stone who discovered aspirin.
And let’s not forget the present. Current celebrities who live locally include Jeremy Clarkson, David Cameron, the former Conservative PM and the other Royal Family, the Beckhams. Find out about their country homes!
