The Rogues, The Eccentrics, and the Trail Blazers!
Come and explore the history of Oxford’s Rule breakers, both the famous and the infamous.
Some of our rule breakers were out and out rogues, villainous rascals with little conscience. Hear the fascinating story of scoundrel William Davenant, Poet Laureate and probable illegitimate son of William Shakespeare and the still darker narrative of another 17th Century Poet and libertine, the notorious Lord Rochester (pictured).
Others were more likeable rogues! Delve into the lighthearted escapades of the Regency Dandies Beau Nash and Beau Brummell, the celebrity leaders of their time.
Then there are the amusing eccentrics who confounded society’s expectations. Enjoy hilarious anecdotes of characters such as Dr Spooner of New College, originator of the humorous sayings known as spoonerisms and the equally beguiling sayings and anecdotes of Oscar Wilde’s Oxford years.
And let’s not forget the doings of some rather adventurous college pets!
Lastly there are the trail blazers, those who were ahead of their time who broke the rules’ taboos and boundaries of their day in pursuit of human progress.
Be inspired by scientific investigators such as the Medieval Friar Roger Bacon and the astronomer Edmund Halley.
Discover the gripping stories of political pioneers such as Emily Davison, the suffragette and Benazir Bhutto, the former president of Pakistan.

Getting there: It is strongly advised that you catch the bus into central Oxford as cars are actively discouraged and parking is VERY expensive! Currently Stagecoach and some other bus fares are set at a flat rate of £3 each way and most buses will take you into central Oxford. Alternatively, Park & Rides are an option. Please give yourself plenty of time to get there and reach our meeting point!
