Many great writers have lived and studied in Oxford; playwrights and poets, novelists past and present, crime writers, children’s authors and of course the unforgettable Inklings.

In this walk we will follow in the footsteps of such diverse writers as Oscar Wilde, John Donne, Alan Bennett, Dorothy L Sayers, CS Lewis, Philip Pullman and Vera Brittain. Come and hear their fascinating life stories and explore the places which inspired and influenced them.

Highlights include:

  • The Gothic College which inspired Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey
  • The lamp post which led to Narnia
  • Favourite drinking dens of Oscar Wilde and Percy Bsyche Shelley
  • The Golden Age Oxford of Lord Peter Wimsey
  • The famous Eagle and Child Pub where the Inklings used to meet
  • And the amazing story of the world renowned Bodleian Library

This walk is a true literary treat! Come and hear more about the influence of Oxford in the world of literature on this tour led once again by historian and tour guide Jane Richardson. At the end of the walk you are welcome to join us for a social chat and drink in one of Oxford's historic local pubs (optional).

Getting there: We will meet in Radcliffe Square outside St Mary’s Church (off High St, Central Oxford) at 1.30pm. https://what3words.com/period.pens.number

It is strongly advised that you catch the bus into central Oxford as cars are actively discouraged and parking is VERY expensive! Currently Stagecoach and some other bus fares are set at a flat rate of £3 each way and most buses will take you into central Oxford. Alternatively, Park & Rides are an option. Please give yourself plenty of time to get there and reach our meeting point!
