What started out as a student protest quickly became a spontaneous nation-wide revolt against the Soviet-imposed government in Hungary. Just as quickly, it was brutally crushed by Soviet tanks.
We can debate the impact of many factors including the Suez crisis and the actions and inactions of the UN on the outcome of this brief but deadly revolution.
