Details
In early 19th-century Japan a young, ambitious doctor becomes the reluctant assistant of a medical veteran who treats Edo's lumpenproletariat (Toshiro Mifune).
Famed director Akira Kurosawa is at his most compelling in this three-hour 1965 production, from a Masato Ide-Hideo Oguni-Ryuzo Kikushima script based on Akahige Shinryotan, a 1959 story collection by Shugoro Yamamoto. Mifune, in the last of his many collaborations with Kurosawa, is in rare form. (A subplot about a girl rescued from a geisha house is borrowed from Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1861 novel Humiliated and Insulted.)
