What we’re about
Hong Kong is famous for many things: its iconic skyline, abundance of wide open spaces and affordable housing to name but a few. But HK is perhaps best known for the humble Pub Quiz. Not suprising as it was in this city where it was first conceived.
It was circa 1964 and the brainchild of Park Lin Kin, a korean national residing in Hong Kong. A nun by profession, she was a bubbly character who enjoyed organisng fun events at the convent. The most popular by far were her trivia challenges. When word got around, Park Lin Kin was forced to seek a larger venue. A local tavern obliged. The weekly quiz with Park Lin Kin's quirky style and head-scratching questions proved a big hit. The downside was the availability of alcohol and alas Park Lin Kin soon succumbed. It transpired, however, that the nun had a natural tolerance for alcohol and hid it well. Until one day a random dorm inspection yielded some magic mushrooms and a small pipe concealed inside a hollowed-out bible. Park Lin Kin made a full confession and prompted Mother Superior to consult her rulebook. It confirmed that the use of crack cocaine and halluciogenics were indeed prohibited on the premises. Park Lin Kin left the convent and disappeared. She resurfaced some 30 years later in California where she co-founded an alternative nu metal rock band which, incidentally, took her name. The group went on to achieve global success.
The above account of the origins of the pub quiz remains dubious but accepted by many- largely out of apathy or...whatever. So if you wish to celebrate this legacy; or simply enjoy a drink, meeting new people and engaging in all matters trivial, why not give it a try?
All are welcome!
This group is for those who may enjoy a pub quiz. There are some good ones in the Wan Chai area which I will schedule in. They start at 8pm and wrap up around 10.30pm. Happy hour runs to 9pm for those partial to a cheap(er) drink. Entry is free and prizes are awarded to the top 2 winning teams by way of coupons. So if there's sufficient interest they'll be a table booked under 'David' (my name). Hope to see you there!
