HK Arts Festival: Dance Theatre—Dream in The Peony Pavilion 舞劇《牡丹亭》
Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, CNDancing through dreams and desire: Li Xing’s vision of love, longing and liberation
Directed and choreographed by Li Xing, one of Mainland China’s most sought-after new-generation directors, Dream in The Peony Pavilion is a visually stunning and emotionally stirring dance theatre production that has received critical acclaim and captivated audiences at sold-out performances. Tang Xianzu’s celebrated Ming dynasty play is re-imagined for the contemporary stage with a bold and youthful perspective, blending the expressive language of modern dance and ballet with stage design incorporating flowing mist and dynamic lighting. While dancers move gracefully through a dreamlike atmosphere, the poignant story of Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei—whose love transcends dreams, destiny and even death—is reborn.
