Visit Miu Gok Yuen Nunnery and Martyrs of the 6 Day War of 1899

Miu Gok Yuen Nunnery and Martyr’s Grave, Fung Kat Heung Road is one of the few places where people can go to remember the last armed conflict in what is now Hong Kong. For those of you who are unfamiliar, in 1899 several thousand "punti" villagers in what is now called The New Territories rose up against British occupation after they found themselves pawns between both the Qing and British Empires. The "war" was short-lived. Insurgent clansmen were chased across the Lam Tsuen Valley - 林村谷 where they had a final engagement at Sheung Tsuen -上村. Hundreds died and concessions were granted but in many ways, the rancorous politics of the New Territories can be seen as a distant echo of this brief but tumultuous event.
