Visiting the Shrines and Temples of Ngau Tau Kok 牛頭角

Many people know Ngau Tau Kok as an MTR Station on the Kwun Tong Line nestled between Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong. The curious might go a step further and read about the famous Granite Quarrys that existed there dating from the 18th century. Those Quarrys were part of the famed "Four Hills of Kowloon 九龍四山" and the Qing Dynasty Granite Mining concession that were granted Hakka Families that had moved to the region. Factories, shantytowns, middle-class housing are all associated with NTK. What is not well know are three shrines and temples that hug the original coastline in the area. These shrines and temples are reflective of the devotion of a neighborhood that has found a need to erect traditional Chinese monuments despite the disinterest of urban development.

We'll be meeting at Ngau Tau Kok Station and visiting the first shrine in the park next to the local public primary school. We'll then walk along Ngau Tau Kok Road to a roadside shrine and a temple staffed by neighborhood volunteers amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life. We'll end our walk at Kowloon Bay Station.
