Visit Stanley's Tin Hau Temple - 赤柱天后古廟
Details
Hong Kong Sacred Spaces is marching down our "best of" list of places to visit with a classic. The Tin Hau Temple in Stanley is a fan favorite, given how picturesque Stanley village is. There are quite a few temples in the area, as the village (known as Chek Chyúh - 赤柱 in Cantonese) goes back to the late 17th century. The Tin Hau is the most impressive, founded in 1767 by the notorious naval commander and pirate Cheung Po Tsai - 張保仔.
The temple also houses the pelt of one of the last tigers killed in Hong Kong in 1942.
Check out the Hong Kong Antiquities Advisory Board's recommendation of the temple here.
We'll meet outside exit C1 at the Admiralty station and catch the Citybus 260 to Stanley Plaza. We can walk to the temple at our leisure.
