Honing House is a a place to discover your story and learn how to tell it better. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Honing House offers in-person and online writing courses, as well as 1:1 coaching for writers at all stages in their development.

Beginner's 8-week fiction writing course
·OnlineOnlineWhether you intend to write short fiction or a novel, for yourself or publication, this eight-week course will teach you the basic components you need to write compelling fiction. Each week you'll learn an essential component of the fiction writing craft. Here's the syllabus:
Week 1: What is fiction, anyway?
Week 2: Finding material and turning it into a story.
Week 3: Inciting incidents and common story shapes.
Week 4: Creating characters and conflict.
Week 5: Basics of perspective.
Week 6: Creating compelling details.
Week 7: Tweaking your voice.
Week 8: Tactics for writing and revising your story.Enrollment is capped at 10 students. That way, everyone has the opportunity to ask questions and receive personal attention. By the end of the course you’ll have a draft of a new story!
Make sure you have access to pen and paper, or a word processing software for class exercises. Honing House will provide extra readings as take-home PDFs.
Your instructor for the course will be American writer Daniel J. Cecil. Daniel’s work has appeared in numerous publications including The Rumpus, The Heavy Feather Review, The LA Review of Books, Barrelhouse, the Plant, and The Stranger, among others. His works has been long-listed for the Dzanc Fiction Prize, nominated for a Pushcart, and has received the support of several residencies.
Daniel received a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction from the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, where he also taught fiction for five years.
