Step into a story where the enemy might not be outside of you but buried somewhere deeper.
In Come Closer, possession isn’t always about spinning heads or ancient rites. It’s about the slow erosion of identity, the way a voice inside your head can start to feel more like home than your own. This month, we’re exploring Come Closer by Sara Gran, a sharp, disturbing novella that slips under your skin and stays there. Whether you’re intrigued by the psychological unraveling, the presence of the demon Naamah, or the story’s refusal to give you easy answers, our group is ready to dig into what it means to lose control, and whether Amanda ever had it to begin with.
Book Summary
Amanda has a good life. A stable job. A loving husband. No history of violence. No reason to be afraid.
Until the tapping starts.
Until the blackouts begin.
Until the voice inside her head isn’t hers anymore. As Amanda's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and dangerous, she begins to suspect something terrible has taken root inside her. The signs point to a demonic possession, but the story refuses to let you settle into certainty. Come Closer is a chilling, ambiguous descent into madness—or something far more ancient and predatory. The real terror lies in not knowing which is worse.
You can check the trigger warnings at the bottom, or dive in blind if you prefer a surprise.
Don’t worry if you haven’t finished the book, we’ll start by chatting about whatever spooky (or not-so-spooky) reads we’re enjoying before diving into the featured title. Come for the eerie atmosphere, stay for the lively conversations and, of course, the cats—because let’s be honest, that’s why you’re really here, isn’t it?
Questions? Feel free to drop a comment or message me (Gonzalo) for more details. Hope to see you there!
Trigger Warnings: Come Closer explores themes of psychological deterioration, demonic possession, and the erosion of personal identity. The novella includes depictions of self-harm, violent thoughts, disassociation, gaslighting, and strained domestic relationships. The line between mental illness and supernatural influence remains intentionally blurred. Please approach these topics with care and self-awareness as you read.
