Details

Welcome to the Spooky Spooky Book Club!
Happy Halloween everyone! You're more than welcome to come in your favorite horror clothes to kick off the best season of the year! Optionally, since we will be watching Goosebumps The Haunted Mask on October 10th for our online movie night, for those that want to read a little extra, we can talk about the book and how it compares to the movie/show(?).

Book talk is free! Cat cuddles cost extra ($15 for the cat room).

RSVP'ing here for 5PM ahead of time is highly recommended for the cat room, as space is limited.

Book of the Month: Near the Bone by Christina Henry.

Book Summary
Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they’re not alone after all.

There’s something in the woods that wasn’t there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws.

When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry.

You can check the trigger warnings at the bottom, or dive in blind if you prefer a surprise.

Don’t worry if you haven’t finished the book, we’ll start by chatting about whatever spooky (or not-so-spooky) reads we’re enjoying before diving into the featured title. Come for the eerie atmosphere, stay for the lively conversations and, of course, the cats, because let’s be honest, that’s why you’re really here, isn’t it?

Questions? Feel free to drop a comment or message me (Gonzalo) for more details. Hope to see you there!

Trigger Warnings: Near the Bone delves into themes of:

  • Domestic abuse / Physical abuse — repeated beatings, controlling behavior, isolation by the partner.
  • Sexual violence - the main character suffers non-consensual sexual acts by her husband.
  • Captivity - very strong theme: Mattie’s life involves abduction elements, being locked in, restricted autonomy.
  • Blood, gore, graphic violence - mutilated animals, bodily injuries, hanging dead bodies.
  • Animal death / Animal cruelty - especially the mutilated fox, other violent encounters with animals.
  • Misogyny / Gendered oppression repeated themes of women’s autonomy being denied, expectations of obedience, abuse motivated by patriarchal power.

Please approach these topics with care and self-awareness as you read.
