Details
Howdy again, Houston Classical Music Lovers!
Join us for a fantastic and fun-filled evening of world-class music presented by the Houston Symphony at the iconic Miller Outdoor Theatre! Let's immerse ourselves in the timeless world of classical music while enjoying a beautiful summer night on the lawn.
For this final installment of the Houston Symphony Summer Nights series, we will take part in a thrilling journey of storytelling and adventure! The Houston Symphony will take the stage to perform a dazzling lineup of masterworks:
The Program:
- KORNGOLD - Overture to Captain Blood – Storytelling and adventure take center stage in this stirring overture.
- COLERIDGE-TAYLOR - Violin Concerto in G minor – A lyrical masterpiece featuring rising-star violinist Njioma Grevious in her Houston Symphony debut.
- STRAUSS - Don Juan – A dazzling virtuoso showpiece guaranteed to set spirits soaring.
- DVOŘÁK - Carnival Overture – A joyful and triumphant close to the concert!
Meeting Logistics:
We will meet at 7:30 PM at the picnic area near the concession stands to gather, chat, and grab any last-minute snacks. At 8:00 PM, our group will head together to the hillside seating area to claim our spot before the music begins. Not to worry, I will have a sign!
Seating on the Hill:
The Hill is the perfect spot to make memories together—no tickets necessary!
- Seating Rule: When facing the stage, lawn chairs sit on the left, and blankets sit on the right so everyone has a clear view. Plan to bring an outdoor chair as the group will be seated on the left side. I will also have a large outdoor mat.
What to Bring & Park Policies:
- Seating: A blanket or lawn chair (see seating rule above).
- Food & Drink: You are welcome to bring your own picnic, snacks, and coolers! Alcohol is allowed. (There is also a fantastic concession stand on-site).
- Prohibited Items: NO glass containers, no open flames, and no grills anywhere on the hill. Please leave your pets at home for the sake of the performers and those around us. Tents are not permitted.
- Weather/Comfort: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and bug spray (for those pesky mosquitoes!). Umbrellas are fine to use before the performance for shade, but they cannot be staked into the ground and must be taken down once the show begins.
- Extras: A reusable water bottle, a small flashlight (or your phone light) to help you find your way after the performance, and trash bags to help us keep the Hill and Hermann Park clean!
Getting There: Parking, METRORAIL and Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
Driving & Parking:
There are several parking options throughout Hermann Park to make your visit easy:
- Free Parking: The closest free lots to Miller are Lots A, C, F, G, and H.
- Paid/Covered Parking: Available at the nearby Houston Museum of Natural Science parking garage.
- Accessible Parking: Can be found along Hermann Park Drive for convenient access to the theatre.
METRORail:
Skip the parking hassle and take the METRORail!
- Ride the Red Line to the Hermann Park/Rice U Station.
- From the station, it is just a scenic 5-minute walk. Cross Fannin Street at the crosswalk, turn left on the gravel path into the park, and follow it past the reflection pond straight to the Miller hillside.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Because Hermann Park Drive is frequently closed for productions or heavily congested before and after shows, drivers cannot easily pull directly up to the theater. Please follow these best practices for a smooth ride:
- Drop-off: Set your app destination to the Sam Houston Statue (located at the intersection of Montrose Blvd and Hermann Drive) or the Circle Drive (Lot A / MAC Drive). From there, it is a short, scenic walk over to the theatre.
- Pick-up: Do not request your ride from the immediate theatre curb. Instead, walk to the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) turnaround or the Brown Foundation Plaza on Hermann Drive. This allows drivers a safe and legal place to pull over without causing traffic backups.
- Avoid the Zoo: Do not set your drop-off or pick-up at the Houston Zoo (Lots G/F). Zoo traffic creates severe bottlenecks, and your driver will get stuck.
Pack your favorite snacks/beverages, grab your favorite lawn chair, and get ready for an unforgettable night of music and community. We can't wait to see you there!
