Atheist Death Cafe - Come to eat cake and talk about death

Details

In 2011, a young student of Buddhism in London, Jon Underwood, thought that while Buddhists talk about death every day, most people shy away from evertalking about it. Do we think that ignoring it will make it go away? He didn’t think so! But he did think that death might be less scary, and our lives more “meaningful,” if we took a hint from the Buddhists.

So Jon designed and started the first “Death Cafe,” where people talk candidly and personally about death, while eating cake and drinking tea (hence the cafe). There is no set agenda, the group does not talk about legal matters, suggest actions or solutions, or promote any products or services, and everyone leaves their professional identities at the door. All join the group as simply human beings ready to talk about their common destiny.

While there are several Death Cafes in Houston, this one is a safe, confidential space specifically for atheists, people who do not believe in any gods, a “spiritual” world, or any lives after this one. Consequently, we will not be talking about religion.

We are meeting this month at 12:00 til 1:30 pm in a room at the McGovern-Stella Link Neighborhood Library. Cake and bottled water will be provided.

Please try to arrive on time so that you don’t miss out on the initial introduction/check-in of the other participants, as this is an integral part of the Cafe experience. Thank you!
