Reading: Aristotle, Politics Book III
Chapters 8-13

Our September meeting tackled the complex arguments of chapters 4-7, where Aristotle discusses the difference between the virtue of a citizen and the virtue of a good man simply, and then extends that distinction into the the first, discussion of the different types of possible regimes and sets out the crucial question -- how do each of them work with respect to the common advantage of all the members of the political association.

He introduces chapter 8 by saying we need to pursue this question for each form of government at greater length. Thus we narrow down the question of the best regime. As usual, what appears to be a simple question with a simple answer becomes more subtle with every chapter.
