Women in Coastal Science Speaker Series: Mona Hochman
Details
IN-PERSON: "The Women in Coastal Science Speaker Series is a free, award-winning program that brings together leading female scientists, conservationists, and researchers to share their expertise. Held monthly, this engaging series covers topics ranging from marine mammal rescue to habitat restoration, giving attendees an inside look at the critical efforts shaping our Gulf shores."
Mona Hochman is a microbiologist and educator with over 20 years of experience in teaching and research at Texas A&M University at Galveston. She has taught microbiology lab courses, where students get hands-on experience in identifying bacteria and conducting real-world research projects. She now teaches Introductory Biology I and Marine Zoology in the Department of Marine Biology.
Outside the classroom, Mona oversees the university’s FDA-certified Seafood Safety Lab, where they focus on monitoring bacteria like Vibrio in Gulf Coast oysters to help keep seafood safe. Over the years, she's worked closely with state and federal health agencies and oyster harvesters across the country.
