JUNE PROGRAM TOPIC:
Zero Waste Houston, Single-Stream Composting and Zero Waste Solutions

On June 13, Leo Brito, owner and founder of Zero Waste Houston will discuss climate action and social justice through composting; how it can be used for regenerative practices, and zero waste solutions through organics diversion. Zero Waste Houston is a family-owned business located in The Woodlands, TX and serves much of the Houston metro area. As a strong advocate for less waste and more efficient sustainable practices, Zero Waste Houston was founded as a "food waste/compostables" pick up service. They offer a range of pick-up options, both residential and commercial, to accommodate the needs of customers no matter how much food waste they have.

Recent accomplishments of Zero Waste Houston:
Discovery Green Earth Day, April 20: Zero Waste Houston partnered with the Discovery Green Conservancy and the Citizen's Environmental Coalition to make this year's Earth Day event qualify for Zero Waste Certification, diverting 91.24% of the waste generated from the landfill by diverting organics and recycling. With the help of volunteers from University of Houston Downtown (UHD) and the community at large, the waste management at this event demonstrated that it is possible to have a large event without a large amount of landfilled waste.

In Jan-Feb of 2024, Zero Waste Houston collaborated with the City of Houston Solid Waste Department and Council Member Sallie Alcorn to conduct a six-week Food Waste Drop-off pilot program. Through this initiative, 262 residents participated and over 9,800 pounds of food waste was diverted from the landfill.

Why Compost?
According to the EPA, in the United States, food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills, where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Municipal solid waste landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States, accounting for approximately 14.1 percent of these emissions in 2017. And compost is an important soil resource that shouldn't be wasted.

Zero Waste Houston offers both residential and commercial compost services in an extensive area of Houston:
