AUGUST PROGRAM TOPIC:
Moonshot, a Houston Composting Service
On August 11, Chris Wood and Joe Villa of Moonshot Composting will discuss compost as a valuable soil resource, and the importance of composting to conserve landfill space and reduce potent climate warming methane emissions.
Moonshot Compost is a Houston startup that collects and consolidates food waste for composting from businesses in Houston and Austin, and residents in Houston. Founded by Joe Villa and Chris Wood in July 2020, Moonshot is dedicated to diversion, and educating its customers through its diversion dashboard. Joe and Chris are passionate that developing community-based solutions are the best way to lead climate solutions at scale.

In the fall of 2021, the City of Houston conducted a trial composting drop off program and Moonshot was one of the composting services that participated in that program.
Why Compost?
According to the EPA, in the United States, food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills, where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Municipal solid waste landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States, accounting for approximately 14.1 percent of these emissions in 2017.
From a City of Houston press release in 2021:
“Houston residents, businesses, and institutions generate approximately 6.2 million tons of municipal solid waste per year. Expanding composting opportunities in Houston aligns with the city’s Climate Action Plan, Resilient Houston, and the Solid Waste Department’s draft long-range plan. Whether it’s in our homes or our farms, composting helps to reduce organic wastes, which in return, helps to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.”
