Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare is a festive comedy, written around 1601–1602, that explores themes of love, identity, and mistaken perception through a series of interwoven plots set in the fictional land of Illyria. After being shipwrecked, Viola disguises herself as a young man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, only to become entangled in a love triangle when Orsino sends her to court the Countess Olivia, who instead falls in love with Cesario. The play unfolds through mistaken identities, comic misunderstandings, and parallel subplots involving revelry and social ambition, culminating in recognition and resolution. Beneath its wit and festive tone, the play examines the fluidity of identity and the complexities of desire. It is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies and remains a central work in the English dramatic canon.
